How the program works

Fun first. Fundamentals close behind.

Kids don’t learn tennis from a lecture — they learn it from hitting lots of balls and wanting to come back next week. Our junior program follows Tennis Australia’s Hot Shots pathway: modified courts, low-compression balls and racquets sized for small hands, so kids rally and score real points from their very first sessions instead of chasing balls into the fence. As their skills grow, the court gets bigger, the balls get faster, and the game gradually becomes the real thing.

Sessions run in small groups sorted by stage — not just by age — so your child is always playing with kids at their level. Six kids per coach, every week of the school term.

The colour tells you the ball and court size. The ages below are a guide to the pathway, not a confirmed minimum enrolment age at the club. Call Paul on (07) 3200 5143 to discuss your child’s age, experience and an available group.

Straight answers

The questions every parent asks

Is it safe, and who’s supervising?

Paul Hanley leads the coaching program and holds a current Queensland working with children (blue) card. For questions about the coach leading your child’s session and their working with children checks, contact Paul on (07) 3200 5143. You’re welcome to stay and watch your child’s session. Our child safety policy explains our commitments, including how we handle photos of children.

What happens at the first lesson?

The first session is a placement and a play, not a test. The coach meets your child, watches them hit for a few minutes, and slots them into the group where they’ll have the most fun and the most improvement. You’ll get a straight answer on the spot about which stage they’re in and what a term looks like. The first step is a free 20-minute trial session, so your child can have a hit before you commit to anything.

What should they bring?

A water bottle, a hat, sun cream and closed-in shoes (joggers are fine to start). If you don’t own a racquet yet, we lend kids racquets for free. Ask Paul for advice before buying one.

What does it cost?

Group lessons are $30 per lesson for Red Ball and $35 per lesson for Orange Ball and Green Ball, and you save when you pay for the term up front. Send an enrolment request or call (07) 3200 5143 and we’ll confirm the current term price — no lock-in from asking.

What if it rains?

See our wet-weather answer in the FAQs on the court hire page — the honest version is that a rained-out lesson is made up within the term, and if you’re ever unsure whether a session is on, call us before you drive over.
